Austria is maintaining its border controls with Slovenia and Hungary. As the Ministry of the Interior announced on Saturday, checks will continue for a further six months after November 11th.
Austria is also currently carrying out checks at the borders with the Czech Republic and Slovakia. At all other borders, there are “intensive controls in the area close to the border”.
“Border controls are an important tool for the police to combat people smuggling and asylum abuse consistently. In the current situation, however, the controls are also important to combat terrorism,” said Interior Minister Gerhard Karner. This measure will be needed as long as the protection of the external borders does not work and the Schengen system is broken.
In the meantime, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Italy, Slovenia and Germany have also extended their previously introduced border controls. Austria has been carrying out border controls with Slovenia and Hungary since 2015.
